Once long long ago there was a programmer. They wrote a program and contributed it to the open source community. It was called phplinks and it was good. The program evolved, changed owners, got a New name and after a moment in the sun, was left to wither and die. Months later, on a grey and dreary day, a naive and unsuspecting person stumpled upon the software and downloaded it. After much frustration and seemingly endless hours of aspirin and coffee consumption, he finally caught a glimpse of the genius the original author had embedded in it. He hoped he could revitalize it. Bring it into the 2nd millenium so that its secrets would not be lost in the murky waters of history. We are still trying, but with every incarnation we are closer to realizing the satisfaction the orignal authors must of felt when completing such as ominous task. Our initial public release was dubbed Dew-NewPHPLinks2. It was greatly enhanced by the 2 Sourceforge members adamsjd and nicnoc and repackaged as version 2.0.0.1 see: http://sourceforge.net/project/memberlist.php?group_id=88752 Later a few Dew-code members squashed some bugs and added some features, repackaged as 2.0.0.2 and then 2.0.0.3 Then another member contributed an updated collection of country flags and another added some tweaks to the "featured site" function. Finally, the no longer naive but still unsuspecting person having recovered their sanity and surviving the caffeine withdrawls continued his attempts to further the evolution of Dew-NewPHPLinks. He added some requested features like being able to copy entries to other categories and some other stuff like web spider detection, more tweaks to the "featured site" function, and a way for other programmers to add their own 3rd party modules to the admin panel, making things easier to customize and speeding up the evolutionary process. Then many many moons passed.. too many. Finally the grumpier but wiser person worked with a webmaster that was simltanesouly managing over a dozen installations of the script. This prompted an extensive list of feature requests for the admin panel, mostly to combat automated submissions from spambots. Once the requested features like, banlists, optional notification emails, randomly displayed linkback text were added he added some frontside features like optional left and right navbars for customized content, Google page rank for listed sites and a AJAX powered captcha method to keep those spambost at bay.. That brings us to today. The current beta release: DewNewPHPLInks version 2.1 We hope you like it.
